Description:
An Earthquake in the deep sea, off the coast of South Africa generated fears that the Southern coast of Africa could have been affected by a Magnitude 5 earthquake. Fortunately the earthquake did not seem to affect the South African coast and according to the Geological Society of South Africa, these incidents are not uncommon.
The earthquake took place 2 130 km, 10 km beneath sea level south of South Africa between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth deep in the South Atlantic. The Pretoria-based Council for Geoscience confirmed and pinpointed this seismic activity at 52.913ºS and 22.286ºE deep in the South Atlantic, halfway between South Africa and the Antarctic.
