It is part of the Oliver Tambo District the town was formerly known as Umtata, Mthatha was renamed in 2004. The town was founded in 1883 and was orginally the capital of Transkei. Mthatha has the K.D. Mantanzima Airport named after a former leader Kaiser Mantanzima and is also nearby the town Mvezo, the birthplace of Nelson Mandela.Apart from having both Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, Mthatha offers attractions such as nature reserves with wildlife, birdlife, hiking trails, picnic spots, water sports (at the Umtata Dam) and the Nelson Mandela Museum.
