Specially built for the Fifa World Cup Soccer 2010, the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium has a gross capacity of 48 000. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium hosted the five first round, one second round and one quarter final and a third place playoff matches of the Fifa World Cup Soccer 2010. Structured as a futuristic soccer stadium to serve local people in a practical manner thereafter, it has ample parking and capacity to ensure every safety and security requirement.
An outstanding venue overlooking the North End Lake in the heart of the city, its official opening was on the 28th February 2010.
With a construction cost of R2.05 billion (USD $270 million) it has a natural grass surface and looks like a flower constructed with a series of white petals, nicknamed by some as the Sunflower. The roof material consists of a combination of aluminium cladding combined with a membrane material called polytetraflurethylene. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium boasts with 23 private boxes, 150 VIP suites, 60 business suites, a sports clothing shop, gymnasium, lecture and function rooms.
