Description:
Established in 1875 and named by the preacher Andrew Murray, Nieu-Bethesda in the Eastern Cape lies in a narrow valley and is seen as retreat for artists and crafters. Closely situated to Graaff-Reinet, the village of Nieu-Bethesda offers typical Karoo farm accommodation and some establishments also cater for guided tours to San caves and paintings, fossil sites, and South African War engravings. Locals are tutored at the Bethesda Arts Centre that was established in 1999 in the art of drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and mosaics. Visit the Owl House with Helen Martin’s very special and unique art work of sculptures in concrete and glass. The Outsiders B&B offers accommodation when visiting Nieu-Bethesda for their annual New Year’s Festival of Lights held in December.
